The origin of the Minangkabau name
The name Minangkabau comes from two words namely, Minang and Kabau. The name is associated with a legend known in Tambo.
From the tambo, it is said that once upon a time there was a foreign kingdom that came from the sea and would conquer. To prevent fighting, local people propose to fight the buffalo. The foreign troops agreed and provided a large and aggressive buffalo, while the local community provided a baby buffalo that was still breastfeeding. During the battle, the calf, who was still breastfeeding, thought that the big buffalo was its mother. So the calf immediately ran for milk and gored it to shreds the big buffalo's belly. This victory inspired the local community to use the name Minangkabau.
